Bridge Club
Poynton bridge club in Cheshire is a great place where you can get together with similar like minded persons and push a few playing cards around the table.
Poynton bridge club is always looking for new members especially young new members, perhaps students emerging out of college or university. Bridge is a wonderful pastime that helps stimulate the brain: the mechanics in the game can keep a dialogue going for hours on just one hand alone!
Most bridge clubs now make available teaching to new members – usually for a small fee to pay a tutor who will teach newcomers how to take part in the greatest card game of them all. Poynton bridge club, like all clubs, in addition presents distinctive sessions for different standards of play so certain nights will be stronger than others.
The majority of bridge in the United Kingdom is Duplicate Bridge where pairs compete alongside one another – commonly there is a north/south winner and an east/west winner. Some clubs will do an arrow switch so that all the pairs can compete against one another.
If anyone is interested then please let us know if you would be coming on your own, so that we can find a partner for you.

Marionette Theatre
Founded in January 1999 by the Horsman family (John, Sandra and Rebecca) in Poynton. Membership of the group is variable, our age range can vary for children around 8 years through to young adults and the original founders.
Our main aim is to introduce young people to live audiences without the trauma of learning lines and long rehearsals. To a watching audience of any age, our marionettes are “little people”. It’s the skill of the puppeteers that make that possible by their effective manipulation.
Men in Sheds
Poynton Men in Sheds has a dedicated workshop space where mainly local men meet to make or fix things. Conceived as a place for men to go to build confidence, prevent loneliness and enjoy the camaraderie of others if wanted.
It is a place to pursue practical interests at leisure, while in the company of others.
Some work on projects of their own, or the community projects we engage in, but mostly we enjoy working together making the wooden items we sell to meet our expenses. It is also OK just to turn up for a natter, tea and biscuits.
Whatever men choose to do, one inevitable consequence is that they start talking to one another. Talk turns to banter and that often results in enormous amounts of laughter and fun.
Open Hands
Open Hands is a not-for-profit organisation and operates simply because we care. We are committed to providing a helpful friendly service to all our clients.
Open Hands is a friendly local charity, based in thecentreinpoynton. Our primary role is to help vulnerable people who would find it difficult to use public transport to get them to appointments etc.
Poynton Local History Society
The Poynton Local History Society has been in existence for over 50 years. Our meetings focus on a talk by an invited speaker on anything with a local history theme.
Most of these include a slide show on the subject followed by questions from the audience and hopefully answers from the speaker. Everyone is welcome as a guest for £3 and we offer membership, which covers the eight meetings, for just £12. Many of the members can usually answer questions about the history of Poynton to all comers and we are a friendly bunch.
Poynton Philatelic Society
Poynton Pottery
A fun and relaxed environment to come and be creative. The classes are suitable for all levels from total beginners to those with more experience.
The classes for adults run in 6 week blocks and are predominantly hand building (unless you have prior experience of throwing or have completed private throwing tuition with us).
All of our classes run for 2.5hrs. Classes are generally mixed ability but are always suitable for complete beginners. Every course will have a project to inspire different ways of making and will cover a range of different techniques. You will learn how to make ceramics using hand building techniques and how to finish the forms you produce to a high standard before moving on to decoration techniques to finish the pieces. Once you have completed a 6 week course you may continue to follow projects or use the time do develop your own ideas, with a tutor on hand to guide you.
A six week block costs £120, which includes all materials and firings. We offer two types of clay a specked buff stoneware and a white stoneware clay and a wide range of slips, oxides, underglazes and dipping glazes.
Some of our previous projects include making: birdfeeders, lanterns, Korean moon jars, jugs, tealight holders, raku and smoke firing, mocha diffusion and outdoor sculptures. Please see our gallery to see the wide range of ceramics produced in our classes.
Sacred Harmony
Come and sing West Gallery Music with Sacred Harmony.
We aren’t the usual type of choir. We don’t have weekly rehearsals, hold auditions, wear dinner jackets, or evening gowns, or perform long pieces by famous composers.
We sing West Gallery Music – forgotten church music from the 18th and early 19th centuries, written by provincial English and American composers. Our musical director, Sally Drage, researches and edits music that has been lost for over two hundred years. But this music isn’t stuffy. It’s refreshingly unpredictable and the Victorians threw it out for being too lively and even irreligious!
All voices are welcome. We sing in parts, so some ability to note read is an advantage, but all music is taught.
Slimming World
Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan is a healthy, flexible approach, based on everyday foods, to help people lose weight without ever going hungry. It’s a practical, family-friendly plan that fits easily into everyday life and doesn’t require complex weighing and measuring or obsessive calorie counting.
At the heart of Slimming World are our warm, friendly and motivating weekly groups, designed to empower slimmer’s to make changes for life. Our groups are where the magic happens — a place to share ideas, inspire and be inspired, make friends, and discover new, healthy lifestyle grooves.
The Consultants who run our groups have all been successful members themselves, and they are trained in nutrition and behaviour-change techniques at the Slimming World Academy.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi or Tai Chi Chuan is a Chinese ancient art that embraces the mind, body and spirit, which is one of the most effective exercises for health of mind and body.
The essential principles of Tai Chi are to integrate the mind with the body; control of movements and breathing; generating internal Qi energy, and let the Qi energy flow through the whole body, help to clean-up the blockages inside your body and to bring the nutrition to every part of your body. Tai Chi is suitable for people of all ages and levels of physical fitness.
All movements are performed in a “Yin Yang” manner and are low impact; this means that they can improve the condition of bones, muscles and joints without strain. The routines encourage energy, balance, focus, flexibility and coordination. Tai Chi is especially good at toning and strengthening the muscles of the thighs, buttocks and calves thus preventing the risk of falls. In the class, I will teach Tai Chi Warm-up, Silk Reeling Energy, Primary Health Care Qigong exercises and Tai Chi Form, and also do a seated meditation at the end of the class.
Textiles
We are a social stitching and mixed media textile group. Our members range from beginners to experienced textile and mixed media enthusiasts.
We enjoy spending a few hours a week together, socialising and sharing our knowledge, skills and experience. We love to explore creative ideas and experiment with fabric, thread, and paint as well as other materials which may be less familiar such as bondaweb and lutrator.
Members also have an opportunity to take part in occasional workshops and learn new skills and techniques if they would like to. We are a friendly group and whether you want to socialise whilst pursuing your own textile interests, or explore your creativity in new directions you will be warmly welcomed.
